Historical Significance
Historically, Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world,
originating in the 4th millennium B.C. Through years of
continuous battle, Jerusalem has been destroyed twice,
besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times and captured/recaptured
44 times. Jerusalem is a city with a history of belief,
treachery, love, hatred, war and peace.
In 1004 B.C., King David defeated Jebusites and made the
city his administrative capital and he brought the Ark
of Covenant to the city. He wanted to build a great Temple
for God where the Ark could rest, permanently. However,
King David was a warrior so it was prohibited. Instead,
his son Solomon created the Temple. To this very day,
the Temple, which had been destroyed and rebuilt more
than once is a place of prayer for Jews.
After King Solomon had passed away, a civil war had broken
out, which eventually spilt Jerusalem and left it vulnerable
for an attack made in 732 BC by the Assyrians, who conquered
it. The city continued to be fought over many great leaders
came through such as Alexander the Great. In the first
century after being destroyed, the Second Temple Mount
was rebuilt.
Through 66 AD, the Roman Empire took reign of Jerusalem
and destroyed the Second Temple and killed more than one
million Jews, while enslaving the surviving Jews. In 132
AD, a rebellion broke out which took the lives of more
than 600,000 Jews. Jerusalem became a Pagan city in which
Jews were not allowed to enter. In 633 AD, an Islamic
conquest helped the Muslims gain rights in Jerusalem whom
allowed the Jews back in to the city to protect the Temple
Mount.
The city is continuously fought over today. However, in
3,000 years' worth of history Jerusalem has never lost
its significance to Judaism. |
